How to apply for student housing

Two people are sitting next to each other and laughing.

Skövdebostäder’s student apartments are rented through a special student housing waiting list and only to students admitted to the University of Skövde.

To be eligible to rent a student apartment, you must be registered in our student housing waiting list and have a valid visa.

You can register by following this link:Register – AB Skövdebostäder
There is no charge to join our housing waiting list. After you click the link, click the globe icon in the upper-right corner and select English to make it easier for you to follow the steps and register for our student housing waiting list.

Please make sure you have selected "student apartments" (studentlägenheter). We recommend that you also register in our regular housing queue at the same time.

Below, this is explained in detail, and you'll also find the answers to all your questions about paying rent and the security deposit.

Your wait time begins on the day you register, and you can register at any time. Each day you spend on the housing waiting list earns you one point; for example, you will have earned 365 points after one year on the list. There is no other way to earn more points. The points are personal and cannot be transferred or added to someone else’s points.

You must update your profile once a year to keep your place in the queue. This applies to both the student queue and the regular queue. To do this, log in to My Pages (Mina sidor), open Student Registration, check the information, and save. Do the same for the other queue if you are registered in both.

  1. Go to " My Pages" to register and manage your housing application.
  2. Then you must create an account. Click “Don’t have an account? Sign up here!” (Don’t have an account? Sign up here!).
  3. Next, select “I want to apply for student housing” (Jag vill registrera mig som sökande).
  4. If you have a Swedish personal identity number, use that number in the format YYYYMMDD-xxxx. If you do not have a Swedish personal identity number, enter your year, month, and date of birth in the format YYYYMMDD—for example, 20010119 for someone born on January 19, 2001. Click the link below the form that says “klicka här,” and four letters will be added to your date. This combination will only work when you log in to Skövdebostäder. Please write it down so you won’t forget it.
  5. Click “Sign Up” and fill out the form.

    a) First name, Last name, Address, Postal code, City/Town

    b) You need to fill in one of the phone number fields. The most common one is the field for mobile. Dagtid = daytime, Kvällstid = evening, Mobiltelefon = cell phone/mobile

    c) E-post = e-mail. You need to fill this out twice.

    d) Choose a password and enter it in the box labeled “Password.” Your password must be at least 8 characters long and include one uppercase letter, one lowercase letter, and one number.

    e) By checking this box, you confirm that you have read and understood our privacy policy and that you consent to us storing your information in our system.

  6. Press the green button that says “Next” (Nästa)
  7. The next page contains information about your income and current living situation.

    a) Income/Employment – At the moment, you must enter something in the “Annual income” field; the rest is optional. Årsinkomst = Annual income.

    b) The last thing you need to do is choose which of our queues you want to sign up for. Apartment = our regular housing queue, Student Apartment = the student housing queue, Storage = a queue for renting extra storage. Next is a description of the student housing option.

  8. Press the green button that says “Next” (Nästa).
  9. Fill out the form for student housing.

    a) Number of adults, Number of children

    b) Preferences = what you want. What you enter here helps the system suggest apartments that meet your criteria. Max rent = the highest rent you are willing to pay; Min rooms = the minimum number of rooms; Max rooms = the maximum number of rooms.

    c) Areas. Select the areas you would like the system to suggest if there is an available apartment that meets your criteria.

    d) The checkbox allows you to set up an email alert (subscription) for apartments that meet your criteria.

  10. Press the green button that says “Next” (Nästa)
  11. The following page is a summary of your information. Read through it and use the "Back" button if there is anything you want to change. If everything is correct, press the green button that says “complete” (Slutför).
  12. You are now on the student housing waiting list. You must apply for the specific student apartments you are interested in. Good luck!

Subject to availability, student apartments that become available are generally posted once a week on our website. Please note that there may be weeks when no student apartments are posted. If you set up an email alert, you will be notified as soon as apartments that match your preferences are posted.

You can find the apartment listings by clicking " Search for Available Apartments " and " Student." Available student apartments.

The apartments are listed on our website from Friday through Monday. During this time, you can express your interest in any of the listed student apartments that you like. The apartments are posted on the website, but you’ll need to log in to My Pages to apply. Once you’re logged in, you can return to the website to apply for them or apply directly through the My Pages interface. You can also indicate your order of preference for these apartments.

Once the registration period for these specific student apartments has closed, we begin sending out offers, usually on Tuesdays. If you have been on the waiting list the longest, you will receive an offer for the student apartment you listed as your first choice. You can only receive one offer at a time. This is generally sent by email but can also be viewed on My Pages. If you decline this offer, you will not receive a new offer this time around. Therefore, only register your interest in the apartments you are interested in.

You generally have two days to either accept or reject the offer. The easiest way is through My Pages. If you reject the offer or do not respond in time, the offer will go to the next person in line. Remember that responding in time is primarily your own responsibility.

Skövdebostäder recommends that you log in to My Pages regularly to register your interest in any advertised apartments or respond to offers.

If you fail to respond to offers on three occasions, you will be barred from registering your interest in new apartments for 6 months.

You may not sign and hold a student housing contract with Skövdebostäder without a current letter of admission to the University of Skövde. If you have applied to the university but have not yet been accepted, you may not sign a contract.

When you sign a lease, your wait time will be reset to zero. And you cannot apply for new housing with Skövdebostäder within six months of the start date of your lease.

It is your responsibility to terminate your contract once you have completed your studies, without being instructed to do so by Skövdebostäder. The notice period is three full months. You can confirm the termination using Bank-ID on our website or by filling out a form. If you need the form, please contact our customer service.

If you are interested in staying in Skövde after completing your studies, we recommend that you sign up for our general housing waiting list when you register for student housing. You can sign up at any time, and there is no charge.

We cannot guarantee that we will be able to offer you housing when you arrive, since there is a waiting period of approximately 6 months to 1 year, although it may be shorter during the spring semester. Therefore, I recommend that you look for apartments in other areas while you apply for ours.

On the Skövde Municipality website, you can find a list of various companies that rent out apartments. You can try contacting them to see if they have anything available.

Questions about the apartments

You can register for the waiting list as early as possible, but you can only express interest in a specific student apartment once you have received your admission notification from the University of Skövde. If you live outside the EU, you must also have obtained an approved visa before you can sign a contract with us. If you have not yet received a decision approving your visa, you must wait until your visa is approved before you can express interest in our student apartments and, if applicable, sign a contract.

No, our apartments are unfurnished. You’ll need to buy all the essentials you need, such as a bed, a desk, and kitchen utensils like a spatula, pots, and pans. However, in standard Swedish apartments, kitchen appliances—such as cabinets and a refrigerator—are included.

We recommend that you have one room per person living in the apartment.

To sign a contract with us, you must have been admitted to the University of Skövde for at least 15 credits, have a valid visa if you live in a country outside the EU, and pay a three-month security deposit.

We will email your contract so you can sign it using a PIN code that you will receive via text message on your cell phone. If you haven’t received the PIN code, please check your spam folder, as our text messages and emails sometimes end up there. It’s very important that your correct phone number is registered on My Pages; your country code must be included, otherwise the text message will not be delivered to you.

Security Deposit and Paying Rent

We will hold onto your security deposit for the entire duration of the contract; you cannot use it to pay rent.

The security deposit will be used, for example, if you have not taken good care of the apartment and we need to renovate it or hire a cleaning company after you have moved out. If water and electricity are not included in the rent and we bill you monthly, the security deposit can cover your consumption for the last month.

We cannot accept any payments at all from countries listed on the EU Sanctions Map. This may be due to various reasons, such as war or other serious issues.

EU Sanctions Map

If we cannot accept payments from your country, we cannot offer you a contract to sign with us.

The three-month security deposit must be paid within one week of receiving the lease agreement. If the security deposit is not paid, you will not be able to rent the apartment, and the offer will go to another applicant.

Here is the information on how to make the payment:

The confirmation comes when you receive the move-in information; it may take a couple of days before we email that information.

You will be able to view the payment you made on My Pages (Mina Sidor) under "Invoice " for a period of one month after we have received the payment.

We charge you for the electricity and water you use if these utilities are not included in your rent. We read your electricity and water meters on a monthly basis. This usage will be listed on your rent invoice. For example, if you move in on August 1, the first charge will appear on your October invoice.

According to the Swedish Tenancy Act, the standard move-in date is the first weekday of each month. If the first of the month falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or a holiday, the following weekday is considered the move-in date. The apartment is available starting at 2:00 p.m. on the move-in date.

Please keep in mind that we don’t work nights or weekends. If you plan to arrive on a weekend, contact the district caretaker a couple of days before your arrival so the two of you can work out a plan for picking up the keys.

Moving In and Moving Out

According to the Swedish Tenancy Act, the standard move-in date is the first weekday of each month. If the first of the month falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or a holiday, the following weekday is considered the move-in date. The apartment is available starting at 2:00 p.m. on the move-in date.

The easiest way to give notice is through My Pages on our website. Whether or not you have a Swedish personal identification number, you can terminate your contract on the website.

You have a three-month notice period for your student apartment. You may wish to end the lease early, but there is no guarantee. For example, if you terminate your contract in March, your notice period will run until July1. If the new tenant chooses to move in on the earlier date you requested, we will contact you. If you do not hear from us, it means that the new tenant has chosen to move in on the later date.

Here's how it works when you give notice.

  • Log in to My Pages and click on " Contract Termination."
  • You can choose to sign your notice of termination using BankID or a PIN code. Click the arrow under " Identification Type " and select one of the options.
  • If you wish to vacate the apartment earlier, click on " Agree to earlier move-out " and select the date.
  • Please check that the contact details are correct, and then click on " The email address and cell phone number are correct."
  • Click on "Submit Notice of Termination," and you will receive an email in which you must verify your identity using BankID or a PIN code that you will receive via text message.

Once you have completed all the steps and the cancellation is finalized, you will receive a confirmation email.

Your apartment will be inspected by your district manager when you move out. Before the inspection, the apartment must be empty and thoroughly cleaned. If the apartment is not properly cleaned or if there is excessive wear and tear or damage, you may be held liable. Make sure all equipment belonging to the apartment is in place.

All keys must be returned to your district caretaker no later than 12:00 noon on the scheduled move-out day, which is normally the first weekday of the month. If that day falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or public holiday, the following weekday is the effective move-out day.
