The Public Housing Sector’s Climate Initiative was launched in 2018—and the goals were updated in 2025. The overall goal is to halve the public housing sector’s total carbon dioxide equivalent emissions from 2025 to 2035.
By focusing on the largest sources of emissions—construction, renovation, energy, and waste—these companies are contributing to a more sustainable real estate sector and a better future.
Climate Performance Targets for 2035
In general, carbon dioxide equivalent emissions for the climate categories listed below must be reduced by 60 percent as a group. The percentage reduction will be achieved through these defined climate performance targets:
- Operating energy is fossil-fuel-free
o The company’s own heating systems are fossil-fuel-free
o Purchased district heating is fossil-fuel-free
o Less than 2 percent of the electricity used comes from fossil fuels
o Minimal emissions of fluorinated greenhouse gases from refrigerants - Fuel for vehicles and machinery is fossil-fuel-free – Achieved at Skövdebostäder
- New construction must have a climate performance of no more than 140 kg CO2e/sq m GFA at the start of construction
- The amount of residual waste per household per week must have an average volume of less than 50 liters in container capacity.
A 35 percent reduction target by 2035
Skövdebostäder and other major companies will also work toward a 35 percent reduction in carbon dioxide equivalents between 2025 and 2035 for the climate-related items listed below:
- Renovation and Remodeling
- Residual waste from operations, construction, and demolition
- Major purchases for the administration (such as flooring and appliances)
