An illustrated image of items that should not be left in the stairwell. They include a bicycle, a flower, a doormat, a kick scooter, and a stroller.

No items in the stairwell

The stairwell should be free of clutter—and this has to do with the risk of fire.

The reason for this is:

  • In the event of a fire, flammable objects can quickly make the situation worse. Thick, toxic smoke can form in just a few minutes.
  • Items left in the way make it harder for emergency responders to do their job during a fire.

For example, doormats, shoes, cardboard boxes, newspapers, strollers, and bicycles do not belong in the stairwell.

Stay in the apartment in case of a fire

In Sweden, apartments are built as separate fire compartments. Therefore, in the event of a fire in your building, you should remain in your apartment and call 112. Then wait for the fire department to help you out.
