How to reduce your water consumption

Water is one of our most important resources, but it is not infinite. Even though we in Sweden have ample access to water, it is important that we use it wisely. Here are some tips on how you can reduce your water consumption.

Save Water in the Bathroom

1. Turn off the faucet while brushing your teeth. You can save up to six liters of water per minute by turning off the faucet while brushing your teeth. That adds up to 24 liters a day that would otherwise have been flushed down the drain.

2. Take a quick shower instead of a bath, and turn off the water while you lather up or shampoo your hair.

3. Contact your building manager as soon as possible if you notice that your faucet is dripping or your toilet is leaking.

4. Only flush urine, feces, and toilet paper down the
toilet. Cotton, cotton swabs, and similar items should be thrown in the trash. Expired medications should be returned to the pharmacy.

Save Water in the Kitchen

1. Keep a pitcher of water in the refrigerator instead of letting the tap run for a long time every time you fill a glass of water.

2. Do not flush food scraps down the drain. Instead, scrape plates and bowls as thoroughly as possible and put the scraps directly into the compost bin.

3. Avoid unnecessary dishwashing. You can cut down on some of the dishes—maybe you could use the same cup all day
instead of grabbing a new one every time it’s time for coffee or tea?

4. Do not wash dishes under running water. Instead, use a drain stopper.

5. If you have a dishwasher: fill it as much as possible and use the economy or eco cycle as often as you can.
