Sweden currently has a high proportion of single-person households, and many people feel lonely. Involuntary loneliness contributes to both mental and physical ill health. As a neighbor, you can play a major role here, and something as simple as just saying “hello” can be more important than you think.
Thin Straps – For Safety and Comfort
"Thin ties" is a concept introduced by Cecilia Henning, who has conducted research on community and neighborhood life. The concept refers to superficial relationships between people in everyday life, which are not as strong as those we have with close friends and family. These “thin ties” are important for our well-being, but also for our sense of security. They are also important for fostering a sense of belonging and creating a sense of connection. Exchanging a few words with a neighbor therefore increases both well-being and security in the neighborhood.
Fewer conflicts and greater consideration
It has also been observed that the more casual social ties there are in the neighborhood, the fewer conflicts there are. Furthermore, any conflicts that do arise are easier to resolve if you know who lives in the building and have spoken with your neighbors before. People also show more consideration for one another.
So be sure to say hello to your neighbor—it’s more important than you think!
