Dogs and Cats in Residential Areas – What Are the Rules?

Owning a dog or a cat can be both fun and rewarding. But not everyone around you may share your joy. Many people are afraid of or allergic to dogs and cats. As a pet owner, you therefore need to be considerate of those around you.

What do I need to keep in mind as a dog owner?

As a dog owner, here are some things you need to keep in mind:

  • Make sure your dog does not cause a nuisance or harm to other people. This means, among other things, that you must not let your dog bark at all hours of the day and night, disturbing your neighbors.
  • Keep your dog on a leash outside your apartment.
  • Remember to pick up after your dog.

What do I need to keep in mind as a cat owner?

As a cat owner, here are some things you need to keep in mind:

  • Keep an eye on your cat to make sure it doesn't run into the neighbors' yards or poop in flower beds and sandboxes. It shouldn't pee in the sandbox either.
  • It's a good idea to keep your pet cat indoors. If you get your cat used to being outside on a leash early in its life, it will accept it.
  • Make sure your cat is identified with a tattoo or microchip. An identified cat is easier to find if it runs away.
  • If you don't plan to breed your cat, have a veterinarian spay or neuter it. That way, you'll prevent unwanted kittens from being born.

What do I have to put up with as a neighbor?

When you live in an apartment building, you have to expect a little more noise than in other types of housing. Even though a dog isn’t allowed to bark at all hours, as a neighbor, you need to understand that dogs sometimes bark. After all, you have to put up with a certain amount of barking.

Cats have the right to roam freely. If you're having trouble with cats in your yard, you can, for example, cover your vegetable garden with netting.

What should I do if my neighbors' pets are bothering me?

Start by talking to your neighbor in a friendly manner. Tell them that you feel bothered by their dog or cat. Ask if there’s any way to change the situation that’s bothering you.

If you can’t agree on a change that satisfies both parties, you can contact either your building manager or Miljösamverkan östra Skaraborg. A quick tip before you do that: keep a log for at least three weeks of the days and times when you’re disturbed—and, if possible, what’s causing the disturbance.
