Important to Know
Here are some things to keep in mind if you live in a low-energy home:
- If you’re going to hang something on the wall—check the drilling chart below or ask your building manager about the rules for your specific building. The building manager can give you good advice on where you can drill and what kind of screws you can use. Since low-energy buildings are very well insulated, long screws can puncture the waterproofing layer. In many buildings, you also shouldn’t drill in the bathroom or in the walls adjacent to the bathroom.
- There is no immediate need to open the windows for ventilation, as the building’s ventilation system is adequate. However, opening the windows is not prohibited; just do so only for short periods of time to avoid excessive heat loss and a decrease in comfort.
- On hot summer days, when the sun is shining on the facade, it can be a good idea to leave all interior doors open to prevent the heat from becoming unevenly distributed.
- During certain seasons and in certain directions, nighttime condensation can form on the outside of the windows. This is because the outside surfaces of the windows are cold—due to their good thermal insulation—and moist air condenses on warm surfaces. The windows act as a heat source when the sun shines on them.

It's especially important to be careful when drilling in a low-energy house.

How do low-energy homes work?
Low-energy homes consume little energy and have an airtight building envelope—which means that the exterior walls, roof, and foundation are all well-insulated. Because the home is airtight, heat stays inside while the cold from outside has a hard time getting in. The home’s primary heat sources are the sun, the people inside the building, and the lighting.
