New Rules for Textile Waste

Effective January 1, 2025, a new EU law went into effect that requires consumers to sort textiles and fabrics in a more sustainable manner. It is now prohibited to dispose of textiles in regular trash. Under this law, clothing, curtains, sheets, and other textiles must be recycled or managed in an environmentally friendly manner. The goal is to reduce waste and promote more sustainable resource management.

What is textile waste?
Textile waste includes all textile products that are no longer in use, such as old clothing, furniture, shoes, and blankets.

How do I sort textile waste?
If the textiles are intact and clean, you can, for example, donate them to a secondhand store, sell them at a flea market, or donate them to a charity shop. Skövdebostäder’s recycling stations only accept packaging—so you cannot dispose of textiles there. However, some municipal recycling stations do have containers for collecting textiles.

If the textiles are worn out or torn, you should dispose of them at a recycling center, such as Risängen.

Worn-out and torn textiles should be disposed of at a recycling center.

Why Recycle Textile Waste?

The textile industry has a significant environmental impact, and by recycling textile waste, we can reduce consumption, promote a circular economy, and reduce the export of clothing.

How can I reduce my textile waste?

Buy sustainable and repairable products, shop secondhand, choose quality items, and repair them instead of throwing them away.

By following the new rules, we can all contribute to a cleaner and more sustainable future.
