How to Prevent a Stove Fire

Did you know that a large proportion of apartment fires start on the stove? By preventing fires from starting—and taking the right action if an accident does occur—you can protect your neighbors.

Important tips for preventing a fire:

  • Set an egg timer when you're cooking, so you don't, for example, forget about a pot on the stove.
  • Clean the range hood regularly.
  • Always keep an eye on the stove and oven when cooking at high heat.
  • Keep a lid nearby so you can quickly smother the fire if the fat in the pot, saucepan, or skillet starts to burn
  • Do not place items on the stove, even if it is turned off.

If a fire breaks out

If a fire breaks out in a pot or frying pan, smother the flames with a lid or a fire blanket. NEVER pour water over burning fat or oil. This can cause an explosion and set the rest of the kitchen on fire.

Rescue, warn, alert, extinguish

Warn and rescue those who are in danger. Leave the building immediately if the fire is too big for you to handle on your own—and close the door behind you. Call 112.
