Most fires can be prevented by taking a few simple precautions—which are especially important during the dark winter months. If we follow them, the risks are minimal:
- Use fire-safe and stable candlesticks, placed at a safe distance from curtains and other flammable materials
- Always blow out candles when you leave the room
- Do not leave children or pets alone with lit candles
- Unplug the power cord after using a coffee maker, hair dryer, or iron
- Do not leave the stove unattended, and keep the range hood filter clean—a forgotten pot can easily catch fire, and the fire can spread throughout the house through a greasy range hood
- Keep the stairwell free of flammable materials and anything that might obstruct the way in the event of an evacuation
