If a fire breaks out

We hope that a fire will never break out in our homes, but we want you to read this so that you know what to do if it does happen.

If a fire breaks out in the building:

Call 112 and signal for help from a window or balcony
Stay in your apartment if there is a fire elsewhere in the building; the front door is normally designed to withstand a fire
Never go out into a smoke-filled stairwell—fire smoke is toxic and can cause you to lose consciousness very quickly
Never use the elevator in the event of a fire—the fire could cause a power outage that would leave the elevator stuck between floors

If there's a fire in your own apartment:

If you can't put out the fire yourself—get out of the apartment and close the apartment door once everyone has gotten out (so that the smoke doesn't spread into the stairwell and the fire doesn't get more oxygen)
Get out of the building as quickly as possible
Warn the neighbors!
Call 112 and alert others

Prevent Fires

Most fires can be prevented by taking a few simple precautions—which are especially important during the dark winter months. If we follow them, the risks are minimal:

Use fire-safe and stable candlesticks, placed at a safe distance from curtains and other flammable materials
Always blow out candles when you leave the room
Do not leave children or pets alone with lit candles
Unplug coffee makers, hair dryers, irons, and so on after use
Do not leave the stove unattended, and keep the range hood filter clean—a forgotten pot can easily catch fire, and the fire can spread throughout the house through a greasy range hood
Keep the stairwell free of flammable materials and anything that might obstruct the way in the event of an evacuation

Amenities in the apartment

Smoke Detector

Skövdebostäder is responsible for providing smoke alarms in the apartment. As a tenant, you should test your smoke alarm from time to time to make sure it’s working. To do this, press the test button on the smoke alarm. If it emits a beep, it’s working properly. If, however, it doesn’t make a sound, the smoke alarm isn’t working. In that case, you should report the problem to us—either through My Pages or by calling the customer service center at 0500-47 74 00.

Fire blankets and fire extinguishers – As a tenant, are you responsible for

The Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency (MSB) recommends that all homes be equipped with a dry-chemical fire extinguisher containing six kilograms of powder and a fire blanket measuring 120×180 centimeters. These items are not provided in the apartment from the start; as a tenant, you are responsible for purchasing them yourself.
