Every kilowatt-hour counts—we're cutting back on our Christmas lights

It surely hasn’t escaped your notice that there’s talk of a risk that there won’t be enough electricity this winter if it gets very cold. If that were to happen, Svenska kraftnät might be forced to cut off power in various parts of the country. But if we all work together to change our behavior and use less energy, we can prevent that from happening.

Skövdebostäder is following Skövde Municipality’s call and the Swedish Energy Agency’s campaign to act under the motto “every kilowatt-hour counts.”

We are now entering a period when we normally increase the lighting as part of our decorations for the upcoming holidays. This year, Skövdebostäder has decided to scale back some of the extra lighting that puts a strain on the power grid. The cost of the electricity saved isn’t significant, but in our efforts to reduce electricity use where it isn’t necessary, every kilowatt saved is a victory.

To begin with, Skövdebostäder will:

  • reduce the Christmas lights in the offices
  • reduce Christmas lighting in residential areas
  • keep the saunas found in certain residential areas closed this winter

“We’ve long placed a strong emphasis on sustainability issues and, for example, continuously review our electricity usage. We hope everyone understands our decision to reduce the Christmas lighting this year. Where possible, we’re trying to decorate in other ways instead,” says Erik Pettersson, head of Boservice at Skövdebostäder.

Skövdebostäder hopes that everyone will think about their own electricity usage and encourages its tenants to do what they can. Here are a few examples of things everyone can do:

  • Turn off the lights when you're no longer in a room
  • Take shorter showers—it takes electricity to heat the water
  • Don't run the dishwasher or washing machine when they're only half full. Instead, fill the dishwasher and washing machine before running them—that way, you'll wash twice as much using the same amount of hot water.
