Wasps

There are several different species of wasps in Sweden, such as the common wasp, the red-banded wasp, and the house wasp.

When wasps build nests in the ground, we generally refer to them as ground wasps. One thing all wasps have in common is that they must be treated with respect. Wasp stings can have serious consequences, especially for people who are hypersensitive.

A wasp nest survives for only one summer. When fall arrives, the colony dies, and removing the nest serves no purpose at this point. Only the females that have left the nest and been fertilized overwinter.

Removing a wasp nest

Removing the wasp nest itself must be done with great care. Wear protective gloves and a bee veil over your head. It is best to do this in the winter when there are no live wasps in the nest, or in early summer when the nest still contains only a single female wasp and a small number of larvae. If you deem it necessary to remove an active nest, it is best to do so on a dark evening when most of the wasps are inside the nest. The evening chill also makes them sluggish.*

Seek professional help if the wasp infestation becomes too severe or if you’re unsure how to remove the nest. Unfortunately, a pest control company cannot deal with stray wasps that may have their nest in an unknown location.
