Temperature in the apartment

We strive to ensure that everyone feels comfortable and healthy in our apartments. A good indoor climate is important both for you as a tenant and for the environment. To maintain a comfortable temperature while saving energy, there are a few things you may want to keep in mind.

Skövdebostäder follows the Public Health Agency of Sweden’s recommendations for a comfortable indoor temperature. During the heating season, when heat is supplied to the apartments, we aim for a temperature of approximately 21 degrees. In our senior housing, the target is approximately 22 degrees.

Winter, Spring, Summer, and Fall

Indoor temperatures vary depending on the season. Outdoor temperatures also affect the temperature inside the apartment, which is completely natural. During hot summer days, the Public Health Agency of Sweden recommends that indoor temperatures should not exceed 26 degrees. During heat waves, slightly higher temperatures may be acceptable during the day, but at night, the temperature should not exceed 26 degrees.

In the winter, our goal is to maintain an indoor temperature of 20.5–21 degrees.

The heating system operates automatically and regulates the temperature based on both the indoor climate and the outdoor temperature. In the spring and fall, when the weather can change quickly, it may sometimes take a while for the system to find the right balance. When we measure the temperature, we do so in what is known as the “occupancy zone”—a short distance from the exterior walls, floor, and ceiling—to obtain an accurate reading.

Tips for a Comfortable Indoor Temperature

What should I do if it's hot in the apartment?

During the summer, there can be some hot days, and the sun shining through the windows can raise the indoor temperature. To maintain a comfortable temperature in your apartment, there are a few things you can do.

  • Keep the sun out
Close the windows, lower the blinds, and draw the curtains during the day to keep the heat out. If the curtains don’t provide enough protection, you can hang towels or sheets to cover the windows completely.
  • Open your windows, but only in the evening.
Once the sun has set and it’s gotten a little cooler outside in the evening, you can open windows and doors to let in cooler air. Feel free to open several windows, as this creates a cross-breeze that ventilates the entire apartment.
  • Turn off heat sources
Electrical appliances that are turned on, such as computers and TVs, can increase the indoor temperature, so please turn them offcompletely to avoid raising the indoor temperature even further.
  • Feel free to use a ceiling fan or table fan
Position the table fan so that it draws in the cooler air from the floor and blows warm air up toward the ceiling. Since the fan’s motor also contributes to the heat in the room, you should turn it off when you leave the room.
  • Place a bowl of ice in front of the fan
Fill a bowl with iceand place it in front ofa fan. This cools the air coming from the fan as the ice evaporates.
  • Other tips
To stay cool, it's a good idea to take cold showers or go for a swim in a lake. Also, remember to drink plenty of fluids.

What should I do if it's too cold in the apartment?

It’s important that you, as a tenant, feel comfortable and at ease in your apartment. Taking a hot bath or putting on warm clothes can provide temporary relief, but in some cases, the low temperature may need to be addressed in other ways.

Here's what you can do yourself:

  • Check that the radiators are turned on
The radiator valve should be fully open, and the top of the radiator should be warm. If the top of the radiator is cold, it may need to be bled; contact your building manager.
  • Do not place furniture or heavy curtains in front of the radiators
Make sure that furniture and/or curtains do not cover the radiators, as this prevents heat from reaching the room. Leave at least a 10–15 cm gap.
  • Make sure the range hood is not in boost mode
    Except when cooking.
  • Check the apartment's ventilation
The vents should be open and clean. Keep interior doors open so the heat can circulate more easily throughout the apartment. Do not block the slotted vents.
  • Close your windows
Feel free to air out your home, but only for short periods. Don’t leave your windows open all day; instead, air out your home thoroughly for no more than 5 minutes. You can also lower your roller shades or blinds at night when it’s cold outside to keep the heat inside your home. But be sure to raise the blinds when the sun comes out.
  • Check the window weatherstripping. File a service request if the weatherstripping is damaged.

How can I ensure proper ventilation?

Good ventilation helps maintain a healthy and comfortable indoor environment—while also preventing problems with moisture and mold. Here’s what you can do yourself:

  • Feel free to air out your home, but only for short periods.
Don't leave your windows open all day; instead, air out your home thoroughly for no more than five minutes.
  • Wipe down the vents at regular intervals.
Use a damp cloth with a little dish soap. Be careful not to adjust the vents.
  • Wipe up any moisture from the walls and floor after you shower.
  • Leave the bathroom door slightly ajar to improve ventilation.
